A few weeks ago we made a trip to Detroit, MI. It was an unexpected trip, but certainly a fun one. We went to game 4 of the World Series at Comerica Park to see the Tigers play the Giants. The Tigers ended up losing the series, but we had a wonderful time! More on the game & Comerica Park later.
Our trip to Detroit came about in a funny way. Joel & I already had time off from work (and grandparents lined up for CJ) to go on an annual getaway not far from here. When the Tigers were doing well against the Yankees in the battle for the AL title, I mentioned to Joel that we should look at World Series tickets for the fun of it. We kind of wrote it off at that point. Then when the Tigers swept the Yankees in four games, I popped my head into my boss's office and we started talking about the game. My boss follows sports quite closely and he knows we are big baseball fans. My boss asked me if I was going to buy World Series tickets for Joel's birthday and I laughed it off. Then my boss went into big-time advice mode (in a fun, nice way!) and he started laying out all of the pros of going -- we already had the time off, we should take advantage of the chance to go while we can, etc. I have to say he made a really good case! He even brought up the Stub Hug website (where you buy tickets). Thinking back on our discussion, it was pretty hilarious how convincing he was. At one point he said something like "I've almost convinced myself that I should go...and I'm not even a Tigers fan!"
So I thought about it on the drive home after work and when Joel & CJ got home, I told Joel "I've decided that we're buying tickets to the World Series!" Joel couldn't believe it -- he eventually came around and thought we should go for it. Joel has been a Tigers fan for a good share of his life and I thought it was so fun that we could make it happen!
We flew to Detroit and arrived there Saturday afternoon. After checking into our hotel, we found a fun BBQ restaurant downtown. There were so many Tigers fans walking around downtown and a few times people would break out into chants saying "Let's go Tigers!" It was a really fun atmosphere.
This post is about the non-game activities we did in Detroit...like I said look for another post later about Comerica Park and the World Series game!
Sunday afternoon we found a local restaurant that was connected to a brewery. The restaurant only served pizzas made in their brick-fired oven and beer & cider (made next door). It was such a quaint place! We had great food - one meat pizza and the other pizza was topped with caramelized onions, figs, and gorgonzola cheese. YUM!
Dan: this one is for you! Here is a sign in their parking lot -
After the pizza place, we went to the Detroit Institute of Arts -- they have a beautiful gallery and it was fun to stroll around together (this is not something we would do when CJ is with us). After walking through the gallery, we stopped at their coffee shop -- it is in a large atrium area. It looks like it might have been an outdoor courtyard at one point, but now it is covered with a glass roof.
